Jan Delvaux en DJ Bobby Ewing

Belpop Bonanza Songfestival Special

The Eurovision Song Contest is much more than a song competition. It is suspense, spectacle, bar-side debate and at least 10 million Belgians who are absolutely convinced they could do it better themselves. Through stories, music and surprising trivia, they dive into the history of Belgium’s entries. From major successes to delightful curiosities, from parliamentary questions to pure stage glory. As always, Delvaux and Dewit do so with knowledge, flair and a strong sense of humour.

The Eurovision Song Contest is the World Cup of pop music. Complete with fuss, suspense, commotion and bar snacks. And with 10 million cheering Belgians who all think they know better…

The Eurovision Song Contest is also a matter of national importance. After all, our participation is paid for with taxpayers’ money. So politicians do not hesitate to get involved as well. Parliamentary questions included.

The Eurovision Song Contest is hotter than ever. At once cult and hugely popular. Today, a finalist can even perform at Rock Werchter or Pukkelpop. Until recently, that would have been unthinkable.

Time for a tribute to the phenomenon. Belpop Bonanza presents a special on the Belgians and the Eurovision Song Contest. As it happens, VRT will be taking the lead again in 2027. Perfect timing.

Of course, much has already been said about the festival. There are even hefty books devoted solely to the Belgian entries. But perhaps you have not yet met Jan Delvaux and Jimmy Dewit.

Naturally, they sink their teeth into 70 finals, 40 semi-finals, countless preselection rounds and our entries in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. But above all, they present the results of their own substantial research. The two answer pressing questions such as:

  • Did ABBA ever actually go to Waterloo?
  • Which Belgian entry won the 2017 MIA for Hit of the Year?
  • Who is Jennifer Jennings?
  • Which country has never given us any points?
  • Why does Gustaph always wear a hat?
  • What is the connection between Pink Floyd and Ann Christy?
  • Why was Ben Crabbé not allowed to go to the final in 1983?
  • What is the last Dutch-language song that took part?
  • Who were Liliane Saint-Pierre’s soldiers?
  • Which group was keen to finish last in 1980?
  • Who is in love with Sandra Kim?

About Belpop Bonanza

Belpop Bonanza (°2013) is the banner under which Jan Delvaux and Jimmy Dewit (aka DJ Bobby Ewing) tell stories about the finest moments in national music history. With expertise and plenty of knowing winks.

About the makers

Jan Delvaux (°1962) fell into a barrel of stories about Belgian pop music at a young age. According to Bart Peeters, he knows more about belpop than Wikipedia.

Jimmy Dewit (°1971) is a music maker, music selector and music talker. He creates soundtracks and spins records as DJ Bobby Ewing and with Discobar Galaxie.
